The GOSSUIN fit

  • Slightly more casual fit than the classic GOSSUIN cut. The upper body stays the same but waist and hip areas are given more ease.
  • Take your normal size.
  • Sleeves are slightly longer than usual so make sure they fall right where the thumb starts.

A note from Alain

I really love the versatility of this shirt. After it was first ironed, you can wear it for many days (with a t-shirt underneath) without even thinking about it. It sure is casual but remains an original piece that people will notice. The fabrics on the thicker end also convey a sense of comfort and sturdiness that I personally enjoy. Wear without moderation.

To give your shirt a good and long life please follow these simple guidelines:
  • Avoid dry cleaning: it can halve a shirt lifetime.
  • Prefer machine wash at 30°C to 40°C. No bleach please. Wash similar colors together.
  • Prefer natural drying (on a hanger), avoid tumble dry. This will preserve fibres and ensure your garment lasts longer.
  • Medium iron, medium to little steam. Choose cotton program if you have one.

We chose a 100% cotton unwashed denim fabric with a weight of 150g/m² which is roughly the weight of a classic casual shirt.

The fabric is highly traceable and will acquire a unique sheen over time.

A lasting shirt starts with robust fabrics and materials.

We chose a cotton-linen blend (71/29) fabric with a weight of 220g/m² which places it midway between a classic casual shirt and an overshirt.

The fabric is highly traceable and the linen part adds a little bit of stiffness to the garment, perfect for a light overshirt.

The colour is absolutely sublime and easy to pair.

Matching rounded point collar and patch pocket

We always spend a lot of time on the balance of the collar to make sure it is aesthetically pleasing and stands straight.

The collar is medium stiff and comes with rounded points that makes it a more casual option. Collar stiffeners are provided if you ever wanted to go for a more formal look.

The patch pocket matches the round shape of the points and of the cuffs.

The pocket is fully functional with its own dedicated mother-of-pearl button.

Scalloped cuff

The cuff is scalloped right where the thumb sits to facilitate placement of the cuff on the wrist

This is the GOSSUIN signature.

A sleeve designed with movement in mind

Traditionally placed below the wrist, our sleeve placket sits on the outside of the sleeve, in the alignment of the little finger. A stopstitch is always present to reinforce the placket at its most fragile spot. No more carving your desk!

The sleeve comes in two parts (traditionally you only have one). This technique, often found in military garments, allows for a better drape and better movements.

Sleeves are sewn together separately before being stitched to the body of the shirt, a technique only found in luxury and bespoke garments. As a result, a seam mismatch appears at the armpit level. Here again, comfort is increased.

Back in bias

Back fabric panels are cut and set in the bias (45 degrees angle with the weave line) and sewn together symmetrically across the central seam, forming a "V" shape.

This provides extra elasticity, comfort and freedom of movement with 100% natural garments without requiring any stretch inside fabrics.

This technique is a hallmark of a GOSSUIN creation and has been used for virtually all shirts created so far.

A better bottom

The bottom is straight with a light curve at the back and curvy at the front with both panels stopping at the same level, forming a nice geometrical shape at the hem junction.

The hem junction is reinforced with a stop-stitch to make sure it is really solid. We prefer this option to the less visually pleasing hem gusset added by many brands.

Locked-up buttons

We commissioned custom real mother-of-pearl buttons that elevate the style of the shirt.

The button attachment is secured width lockstitches. The filament under tension around the shank of the button is wrapped with a thermo-fusible thread.

The result is a durably secured and easy to fasten button, providing a high-end finish to the shirt. This technique is widespread in bespoke shirt tailoring and luxury items.

The last buttonhole on the central button placket is positioned horizontally to help maintain the bottom of the shirt in place against the hip when the shirt is tucked in.

Environmental impact

Let's be clear, manufacturing new garments will always impact the environment.

That said, by measuring it, we can identify how to gradually reduce it on every new creation.

This is the impact of producing one HELLENICE 01 shirt.

Racing to the overshirt

Hellenice 01 is an homage to the famous female racing pilot from the 30s.

Back in the days, racing cars had rounder, oval shapes which inspired the points on the collar, patch pocket and cuffs.

The inspiration did not stop there as we wanted this shirt to look and feel more casual with a fit better cut for everyday use whether on the road, in a bar or simply strolling around on the weekend.

It's been a while since we wanted to work on a slightly heavier shirt, a garment you jump in in the morning, toss on your chair at night and wear again the next day.

With this in mind we worked on something hybrid between a casual shirt and an overshirt. We did not want to go full overshirt either as we wanted to be able to wear it without a t-shirt underneath.

That said,  the garment had to remain unique, easy to wear yet not boring like overshirts usually are, distinctive and elegant very much like “Héllé Nice” was.

Pick pocket

We dig deep into our archive and found a very nice inspiration in a worn-out shirt made a few decades ago.

The shirt had a pocket and collar with round shapes that we modernized.

The collar comes with round points which gives a distinctive look and the pocket and cuffs subtly match that. Altogether these make the garment an elevated casual shirt.

We finally decided to give the shirt a slightly looser cut where more ease was given on the waist and hips.

HELLENICE 01 was born!

Made to last

On fabrics, we picked a range of weights from a medium weight shirt to a lightweight overshirt.

We picked each of them for their feel, ease to wear, comfort and sturdiness. Trust us, you will wear these for years.

We also decided to go for interesting colours with a dark denim that will get a sheen over time and a khaki/chocolate surprisingly easy to pair. We completed this by picking a very nice light blue oxford.

One big problem though, it is going to be difficult to wear anything else.

Wear responsibly.

It took many people to bring HELLENICE 01 to the world. This section is dedicated to them.
